Goodbye to Pie

Nobody loves apple pie more than I do. In fact, it may horrify you to know that I've been consuming a least 1 or 2 large apple pies a week on average.

Lately, there has been a lot of talk on the radio and in news papers about the dangers of hydrogenated oils in our food. I was curious, so I decided to see what all the fuss was about, by doing a google search. Well, I discovered there's good reason to fuss. The stuff is poison. The FDA knows it and so does the processed food industry. Yet it's still being used, and in many, many of the foods we eat.

But don't take my word for it, check it out here.

Today when I was grocery shopping, I found Hydrogenated or Partially Hydrogenated oil in every bakery product in the store. How lame is that?

So yeah, now I have to find some other tasty dessert to have with my after dinner tea. It'll be difficult to find something as lovely as apple pie. Perhaps I'll learn how to make my own.

In the states we have a grocery chain that has just recently abandon all their stock that contains hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats. The chain is "Whole Foods" - Although, sadly, not all of the stores of this chain have adopted this policy, I do know that at least the ones called "Whole Foods" and "Wild Oats" have.
Good luck in your search for the untainted apple pie.

LOL! I think I am having pie withdrawal! I love the stuff, and I sure miss it! Even more annoying is the fact that I keep finding more stuff in my pantry that is loaded with hydrogenated oil; Eggo toaster pancakes, Waffles, and even one of my favourite frozen lemon and pepper fish dinners has it as the second ingredient.

The tricky part is; do I ask the clerk at the coffee shops or the bakeries if they use hydrogenated oil in their baked goodies? If they do, they're probably going to thing I'm being a 'trouble maker' and kick me out of the place.

My mom has a few good fruit crisp recipes that I can learn to make, that should at least satiate part of my need for pie.

That certainly disturbing. Especially since I love apple pie too! At nearly $2.00 a slice, it is something I don't usually buy but when I do, I cherish every bite.

Uh oh, I hope I didn't aggravate your apple pie withdrawal symptoms. :-)
